October 1944

“The city [Aachen] occupies a very strategic position on the Belgian border and was therefore a cornerstone in Adolf Hitler’s Siegfried line. This included construction of a line of ‘dragon’s teeth’ along the city’s western edge and the construction of several fortifications.

Aachen was the first major city in Germany to be captured by the Allies. It fell, after heavy fighting, on 21 October 1944.” Credit Battlefieldsww2.com.

The Fort William Daily Times Journal was chockful of news on October 2, 1944. On the front page, bold headlines traced the great war in progress. Still, this page squeezed in items about hockey players, liquor rations, and a tragedy unfolding in a rural community.

NOTE: I downloaded that front page again recently, and tried enhancing the image in a first-class imaging program, but the quality did not improve.
