VISIT TO PORPHYRY ISLAND

From a distance, looking south, we spotted what resembled a tall white pine on the point. It was the light tower.

On Monday, August 11th, our family group visited an island in Lake Superior. Porphyry Island is 15 kilometres east of Silver Islet community, at the tip of the Sleeping Giant.

You have no doubt been following the weekly posts of Paul Morralee in The Chronicle-Journal about this island and its historic lighthouse. In spite of not knowing us from Adam or from Eve, Paul greeted us warmly, determined to give us a memorable trip.

I will be posting about this memorable trip over several days.

Looking east, beyond the tower is the lightkeeper’s residence, multi-roomed. The closer building once housed the fog horn. The tall structure is the original fog horn, long retired. In the foreground is a tiny replica of the original lighthouse.
